JAMIE WINS PONTIN'S JUNIOR TITLE |
DATE: February 2006 |
Eleven
year old Bryn Primary School pupil, Jamie Clarke, has become the Pontin's
2006 Junior Star of the Future Champion. The championship was held at
Pontin's holiday camp in Prestatyn over the February half term.
This under 12 tournament attracts the cream of the young players from the
UK and beyond and past winners have included professional champions of the
future, such as Ronnie O’Sullivan .
Jamie went unbeaten in his four qualifying matches and then had some very
close shaves in his three knock-out matches on the way to the final. In
the final he beat Oliver Brown from Dronfield 2-0 in very convincing
fashion.
For his excellent achievement, Jamie won a digital camera, £200 and £1000
of sponsorship from Pontin's.
All spectators were very impressed with Jamie's maturity around the table.
He is not 12 until October and adds the Pontin's title to a recent win in
a Welsh under 14s ranking event.
Jamie has been part of the Terry Griffiths Matchroom's Player of
Distinction scheme for almost two years and enjoys free practice and free
coaching at the club.
Wayne Griffiths, Jamie's coach at the Matchroom, continues to be impressed
by the young player’s ability to perform under pressure:
"Jamie seems to play his best snooker when under the most pressure. Put
him in front of a crowd and he responds with a maturity beyond his years.
This attribute, coupled with his sound technique and natural talent, will
serve him well as he progresses through the ranks. He is already being
talked about as one of the young players to watch in the next few years."
Matchroom owner and leading snooker coach Terry Griffiths added:
"We are very proud of Jamie's recent achievements in the Welsh and
National arenas. Jamie, along with young Kieran Elliot, is benefiting from
the practice, competition and coaching we offer at the Matchroom and we
hope that there will be more young players to follow in their footsteps.
“It is hoped that we may continue to play a part in ensuring that Llanelli
and the surrounding area is recognised as a breeding ground for excellent
snooker players for many years to come"
The Matchroom runs a junior snooker club on Sunday mornings and which has
seen regular entrants increase from 15 to 40 in the last year.
