CHRIS CLAIMS PONTIN'S TITLE

DATE: November 2005

Chris Davies enjoyed his summer holiday at Pontin's Brean Sands Centre in Somerset.

While there he and brother Leighton and father Paul, competed in the holiday maker's snooker and pool competitions.

All three won their respective events. Chris was successful in the 11-14 age group, brother Leighton in the 16-19 group and, not to be outdone, Paul won the 8-ball pool competition.

Those victories gave all three an invite to visit Pontin's Prestatyn in November to compete in the Grand Gala Finals.

Leighton, who won the 16-19 age group in 2004, was unsuccessful this time round, bowing out to the eventual winner in the quarter finals. Dad Paul lost out in the last 16 of the Pool tournament and so it was left to fourteen year old Chris to fly the family and Matchroom flag.

He did this in great style, eventually emerging as champion from a 48-strong starting line up.

And it was a double victory for Wales when seventeen year old Curtis Lee from the Abertillery Central Club, won the 16-18 age group.

Chris held his nerve to win the final 2-1, in a match refereed by former World final ref John Williams.

He was presented with his £100 winner's cheque by Pontin's favourite Stuart Bingham, who has won two recent Pontin's Open events.

There was a further treat in store for Chris, when he was given a guided tour of the World Snooker facilities by WSA Tournament Director Mike Ganley, and he went home the proud owner of WSA souvenirs, including an official Polo shirt.
