Craig books a trip to Ireland

DATE: January 20054

Burry Port's Craig Jones beat Wayne Griffiths in the final of the Matchroom's Senior Winter Handicap and carried off the first prize of an all-expenses paid trip to the Irish Masters in Dublin in March.

Craig joins Darren Thomas, Frank and Stephen Ellis, winners of other Matchroom events on the plane to Ireland on 12 March.

Craig declared himself  "Over the moon", with his victory.

And his victory came despite a superb century by Wayne Griffiths, who completed a 102 clearance in frame two.

But that was Griffiths' only success as Craig knocked in breaks of 59 and a couple of runs of 40 to secure his 3-1 win.

Earlier Jones had edged past eighteen year old Leighton Davies 3-2 in the quarter finals. Davies was recently the winner of the Pontin's Snooker Grand Finals, beating all the winners of events held at Pontin's centres throughout 2004.

In the semi finals he coasted past Paul Thomas, who is currently riding high in the Welsh Senior Rankings, and that victory was ample revenge for their last meeting, when Thomas beat him by the same margin.

Griffiths had to overcome two of Wales' leading juniors to book his final place. He secured a 3-1 win over Stephen Ellis, before beating his cousin, Ricky Jones, in the deciding frame.
