YOUNG PLAYER OF DISTINCTION

DATE: July 2004

A LLANELLI schoolboy is being groomed as a snooker star of the future.

Jamie Clarke has been hand picked by former world champion Terry Griffiths for a new coaching scheme. The nine year-old is the first youngster to be selected for the Player of Distinction initiative.

Terry and his snooker coach son Wayne are the masterminds behind the project.

Under the scheme, one talented young player will be singled out for special coaching every year. They will receive free practice and lessons at Terry’s Matchroom snooker club.

Jamie of Llwynhendy, first attracted Terry and Wayne’s attention at their weekly junior snooker club. His dedication to the game along with a natural talent made him stand out.

He is now receiving regular coaching at the Matchroom, which includes technical improvements, break building and safety play.

Terry, one of the world’s leading coaches said: “The Player of Distinction scheme is aimed at identifying local talent and helping to develop it.

“Jamie was picked because of his enthusiasm for the game and his willingness to practice routines given to him during junior clubs.

“His cue action is sound for someone so young and he has that glimmer of natural talent that we can build on. However, there is a lot of hard work ahead.”

Jamie, a pupil at Bryn primary, has been playing snooker at home since he was four. His highest break is 45 and he is currently playing in the Matchroom’s summer junior round robin competition.

The Player of Distinction scheme is the latest in a series of new initiatives at the Matchroom in Town Hall Square. Regular tournaments are being staged along with international events and exhibition matches starring big names from the world of snooker.

Terry, who coaches top players including Stephen Hendry and Mark Williams said: “There are many talented youngsters coming through the ranks in Wales.

“We hope this scheme will in time help many youngsters from the Llanelli area who we believe have the potential to go far.

“I would encourage any youngster with an interest in snooker to start getting involved with the junior club held every Sunday at the Matchroom.

“An introduction to the competition and the coaching available gives an invaluable foundation for the future, and maybe used as the first step to becoming the next Matchroom Player of Distinction.
