PAUL THOMAS WINS BRAIN'S SUMMER HANDICAP

DATE: August 2004

Paul Thomas lifted the Brain's Summer Handicap title in style with a 3-0 win over Leighton Davies in the Matchroom Arena.

Thirty-four year old Thomas, from Pemberton Street, giving a 45 point start, took the opening frame thanks to a 57 break.

Davies looked like levelling in the second when he led by more than fifty, but Thomas clawed his way back into the frame and eventually won on the black after some cat and mouse play on the colours.

Spurred on by that Thomas ran away with the third frame to collect the £140 first prize, presented by Club Manager Wayne Griffiths.

It pained Wayne somewhat to part with the cheque, as he fell victim to Thomas in the quarter finals, losing out in the deciding frame.

Thomas went on beat Burry Port's Craig Thomas 3-0 with an emphatic potting display in the semis.

Seventeen year old Leighton Davies pulled off a remarkable 3-0 win over Welsh International player Stephen Ellis in the quarters and then notched an even more notable scalp in the semi final, beating current Welsh Number One, Gavin Pantall, 3-2.

Twenty four players took part in the summer long event, and a high standard was maintained with four centuries recorded during the tournament.

The tournament, sponsored by S. A. Brain, was divided into two leagues of eleven players, who played each other on a round robin basis throughout the summer, with the top four from each group progressing to the quarter finals.

Part of Thomas' prize is a ticket for an Exhibition Night featuring Mark Williams, to be held in The Matchroom in November.

Sponsor S. A. Brain were impressed with another successful event at the Matchroom. Paul Phillips commented "The Terry Griffiths Matchroom has been a long standing account with Brains Brewery. We have sponsored many tournaments at the Matchroom during our 17 year long relationship and we were only too glad to support another well run event.

Terry Griffiths was equally pleased saying "Competitions of this nature are very important to improve players' match play skills. We are encouraging more and more of our members to take part in such events.

"We are soon to launch a Winter Junior and Senior Championship and will also be repeating last year's very popular 'Lads and Dads' tournament in December."
