MARK WILLIAMS
IN MATCHROOM EXHIBITION |
DATE: November 2004 |
Twice
world champion Williams played nine frames of exhibition snooker
at Terry Griffiths's Matchroom Club.
The sell-out show saw the professional challenged by a string of
competition winners and sponsors guests.
Williams said: "Terry asked me to come down and I couldn't say
no or he'd shoot me.
"In exhibitions the audience comes to see you get a few big
breaks but they also want to see their mates get close to you.
"They want you to lose a frame or two and that's part of the fun
of these nights."
With seven 50-plus breaks and one topping the century,
Williams
saw off each opponent - including his coach Griffiths, who came
out of retirement to try to settle an old score. Williams joked:
"He wanted to beat me because I was the player that put him into
retirement.
"I beat him 10-9 on the black at the world championships in
Sheffield and that was enough for him."
There was no revenge this week. Griffiths raced to a 14-point
lead but didn't get another shot as Williams hit back with 72.
The unblemished evening was a far cry from the 29-year-old's
form against his fellow professionals.
"It's my own fault, I don't practice enough," Williams admitted.
"Terry's always telling me to practice more but I just find it
hard to do it.
" Llanelli Star competition winner, Craig Jones, of Isgraig,
Burry Port, was another looking for revenge. The two met in a
junior competition 14 years again. Again Williams finished on
top. Jones, aged 32, is a player at Clwb Bach, Burry Port. He
said: "I got off to a good start with eight early points, but I
left him on and he hit back with a 102 break. It was great
seeing him close up and it was a great night with good snooker
and good laughs."
Williams's Llanelli appearance came six months after Stephen
Hendry played the Matchroom venue.
The club will be organising visits from more top players in
2005.
