THIRD UNDER 15'S IN A ROW
FOR TRUMP
Pontins Open Champion Judd Trump has extended his lead at the top of
Potters Under 15's ranking series even further by winning the 7th
event, his third successive win and 5th triumph of this series by
beating for the second time in a row Stuart Carrington 3-1.
Two breaks in the twenty's secured the first frame for Trump, 69-22,
Carrington drew level with a break of 41, 21-69, but a run also of
41 saw Trump lead again, 76-20.
Trump secured victory and a massive 156 points lead in the table by
winning the fourth frame 68-39, Trump led 44-0 with a 44 break,
Carrington countered with a break of 37 but lost out on the colours.
The winner again potted well in the first two matches making breaks
of 90 and 103 to beat Liam Keene 3-1, runs of 42,43 and 80 to beat a
name to watch, Danny McCann 3-0, followed by a 44 break to crush
Richard Binns, 3-0, and a further 3-0 win in the semi finals over
James Rhodes, 57 break.
Carrington who played very well in the international the previous
month against Wales did not lose a frame in his four matches beating
Ian Barnes, Chris Piech, Gyles Behbood 2nd in the rankings and
Daniel Jassi without making a break over forty, to rise one place in
the rankings to 5th, where places 2nd to 5th are only seperated by
24 points.
Five youngsters made their debut at Potters, brothers Michael and
John Astley, the latter reaching the last eight, Tony Marshall, Judd
Sharpe and young Welsh star Michael White from Neath.
White, 12, recovered well from a first round exit to win the plate
beating Thomas Ainsworth-Smith the undefeated English under 14
captain in last months clash, 2-0 in the final.

W. Johnston, Dion Burns and

JUDD COMES
UP TRUMPS AT PONTINS
Bristol's
Judd Trump, the phenomenal junior talent became the youngest winner of
the prestigious Pontins spring Pro-Am, beating former World Top 8 star
Mike Hallett 4-2 in the final.
Thirteen year
old Trump beat Manchester's James Leadbetter 4-0 in the semi-final,
just hours before Leadbetter himself won through to the final of the
challenge tour event.
Trump, a
former English Under 13 and 15 champion and junior international has
already clocked up more titles than most players achieve in a lifetime
and he wasn't content with the Pro-Am title, as he beat Neath fourteen
year old Jamie Jones 3-0, with a century break in the final, to take
the Pontins Star of the Future title for under 16 players.
The roll of
honour of the Spring Pro-Am, first won by Doug Mountjoy in 1974
includes snooker greats such as Ray Reardon, Steve Davis, Terry
Griffiths, Ken Doherty, Mark Williams, all world champions! Some Stars
of the Future who went on to great things were Jimmy White, John
Parrott, Stephen Hendry and Mark Williams.
Mike Hallett
gained consolation by winning the Pontins Seniors, for Over 40s,
beating Nottingham professional Barry Stark in the final. The Super
Seniors, for Over 60s was won by Walsall's Malcolm Franklin who edged
a 3-2 victory against former professional Doug French.
KRYSA
IS WELSH JUNIOR SUPREMO
Ammanford's Anthony Krysa added the Welsh
Under 21 crown to the Welsh Under 19 title he won earlier in the
season, with a calm and assured performance.
Krysa sailed through to the final without
dropping a frame, beating 2001 Under 21 champion, Jonny Vaughan in the
semis. His final opponent was Neath's fourteen year old, Jamie Jones,
who also had an untroubled path to the final.
Jones looked set to win the opener, but
leading by 51 points, he feathered the cue ball attempting frame ball
pink and Krysa stepped in with a 48 clearance to snatch the frame. The
Under 19 champ also took the second, but Jones kept in the match with
62 in the third. Krysa rounded off victory in style, taking the fourth
with a match winning 73 break, the highest of the day.
Neath's Jonny Vaughan beat Llanelli's Frank
Ellis in the third place play off, to join the two finalists as the
Welsh representatives in the IBSF World Under 21 championship,
scheduled to be played in New Zealand in July. It was Frank Ellis'
best ever result in a Welsh tournament. Brother Stephen, already a
Welsh under 16 international, won the plate event, beating Neath's
James Matthewman in the final.

DAVIES
CROWNED YOUNGEST ENGLISH AMATEUR CHAMPION
Fifteen year
old Alex Davies from Clacton has become the youngest player in the 87
year history of the English Amateur championship to lift the title.
Davies, who
won't be sixteen until 27th July, defeated fellow English junior
international, fifteen year old Ben Woollaston 8-7 in the final, held
at the Matchroom Club, Plympton.
David Gray
held the record as the youngest winner in 1995, aged sixteen years and
four months, succeeding Jimmy White
who was the previous youngest title holder, winning the event in 1979,
when he was just sixteen and ten months. Ronnie O'Sullivan still holds the record as
the youngest player to make a 147. His first max came when he was just
15 years and 97 days, in the 1991 championship.
On his way to
victory Davies knocked out his older brother, nineteen year old Adam
and defending champion Martin Gould and he adds his name to an
illustrious roll of honour that includes the likes of Ray Reardon,
Jimmy White, Terry Griffiths, John Spencer, Stephen Lee and David
Gray.
Both finalists
were members of England's victorious England Juniors at the 2002 Home
Internationals, and just two years ago they met in the English Under
14 final!
English Amateur
Roll of Honour
Ten year old
Gloucester junior Jack Lisowski won the Under 13 title. Predictably
the under 15 title went to Bristol's Judd Trump, and English
international Gary Wilson beat the new European Under 19 champion,
Jamie O'Neill 8-4 to win the Under 18 championships.

WELSH UNDER 16 CHAMPIONSHIP - 16
March 2003
The
new Welsh Under 16 champion is Craig Davies from Cardiff. Davies
defeated Llanelli's Stephen Ellis 3-1 in the final.
But all the drama came prior to
the final with players scrapping it out for vital ranking points and
a place on the Welsh International team for the 2003 Home
Internationals. For Stephen Ellis it meant he had to beat three of
last year's team to climb up the rankings and earn a place and he
did just that with wins over Cardiff's Allan Williams, team mate
Ricky Jones from the Matchroom Llanelli, and the final triumph came
across Wales' leading junior Jamie Jones of Neath, where Ellis
earned a memorable 2-1 victory.
Victory for Ellis necessitated a
play off for the final place in the team between John Williams and
Michael white. White earned his place with a 3-1 win over Williams
and at the same time earned a rare distinction in becoming qualified
for Welsh international status at Under 14, 16 and 18. And for good
measure White will appear in his first senior quarter final next
weekend, having beaten current Welsh champion Tim English with a top
break of 102 on his way through.
Richard Oliver won the U16 plate
event, and it was a case of third time lucky as he'd been beaten in
the previous two finals.
The final squad for Pontins will
be:
Craig Davies, Ricky Jones,
Stephen Ellis, Jamie Jones, Stephen Bailey and Michael White.
RESULTS:
Final: Craig Davies 3-1 Stephen
Ellis
Semis: Stephen Ellis 2-1 Jamie
Jones, Craig Davies 2-0 Stephen Bailey
Quarters: Stephen Ellis 2-1
Ricky Jones, Jamie Jones 2-0 Michael White,
Stephen Bailey 2-1 John
Williams, Craig Davies 2-1 Daniel Wells.

NEATH & PORT TALBOT "COMMUNITY
CHEST" JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP - 15 February 2003
The
qualifying stages for the 2003 Junior event was held at Pontardawe
Arts centre under the watchful eye of Welsh Coach Jack Carney. The
event has become established as an annual "must win" on the Junior
Calendar and Juniors congregated from all over South Wales.
Red hot favourite Jamie Jones
duly obliged, reaching the semi finals without dropping a frame.
Jones notched up wins over fellow Under 16 internationals Stephen
Bailey and Ricky Jones, notching breaks of 52 and 47 along the way.
Llanelli's Ricky Jones took some consolation by compiling the day's
best break of 79 during a last 16 win over Tim Piper.
The Empire Club Neath produced
three out of the four qualifiers with James Matthewman and Michael
White joining Jamie Jones. Eleven year old Michael White was the
youngest qualifier and came through via wins over Michael Davies,
Jon Bushnell and Thomas Carney.
Nathan Biggs was the final
qualifier, narrowly beating John Williams to get through. A fluked
yellow helped Biggs and sent the ever-improving Williams home
disappointed.
The final stages of the seniors and juniors events produced a
thrilling 3-2 win in the seniors final for Gavin Lewis of Neath, who
narrowly defeated Jason Tucker.
The junior winner was 11 year
old Michael White, also from the Empire club in Neath.
LIAM O'CONNOR MEMORIAL PRO-AM - LAST 32 RESULTS

Northern Ireland's
leading junior Mark Allen (pictured) caused the shock of the last
32 with a 4-0 win over Michael Holt. Allen's reward is a dream
match against Ken Doherty. Nigel Bond and Ryan Day have laid down
the bench mark for the high break target, with superb 142 breaks,
taking the century break count to 26. Tournament director Connie
O'Sullivan has placed a 300 Euro bet at 12 to 1 with Paddy Power
bookmakers, against there being a 147 in the event. A shrewd move
which could net a maximum man a 4000 Euro bonus.
Former Pontins
champion Sean O'Neill shocked Dave Harold with a 4-2 win to book
his last 16 place against fellow giant-killer Mario Fernandez, who
sneaked the decider against Jimmy Michie.

LIAM O'CONNOR MEMORIAL PRO-AM - Gleneagle Hotel,
Killarney. 3-5 March 2003
An
128 strong field led by Ronnie O'Sullivan, Jimmy White, Ken
Doherty and a host of the leading Main Tour pros assembled at the
Gleneagle Hotel for one of the largest pro-ams organised for
years.
And the event looks
set to be a hit with the players as they queued up to heap praise
on both the venue and the organisers.
Jimmy White led the
plaudits, saying "This should definitely be part of the World
Ranking calendar, the players are going to write a letter to the
WSA to push this venue to be included as a ranking venue."
Paul Hunter added
his enthusiasm "It's the first time I've been here and it's a
lovely venue, the arena is magnificent and the tables are in good
shape."
Nigel Bond conceded
that the pockets are generous but pointed out "you've still got to
pot them and as the week goes on the tension will build up."
Mark King, who, as a
junior played more than his fair share of pro-ams commented "It's
the best pro-am venue I have even seen. The WSA should make it a
ranking venue and give it to Connie O'Sullivan (the event
organiser) to run it."
The players were
divided into four man round robin groups, ensuring at least three
matches for every competitor and, for some of the amateurs, a rare
chance to play a match against the world's best.
And a couple of the
underdogs claimed scalps during the round robin faze. Fifteen year
old Irish junior David Morris (pictured) beat Phil Williams 3-2,
with a magnificent 127 clearance in the decider. Lee Richardson
from the Challenge Tour recovered from 2-0 down to beat Joe Swail
and George O'Hara claimed the most notable scalp, with a 3-2 win
over Jimmy White.
Otherwise it was
business as usual for the big guns, with Ronnie O'Sullivan
smacking in three of the event's sixteen centuries as he breezed
through his groups matches. Ken Doherty won his three matches
without dropping a frame and joins O'Sullivan in the last sixteen.
There is a 4,000
Euro high break prize and it looked likely to go the way of Stuart
Bingham, until he missed the blue of its spot, when attempting to
clear up for a maximum break.
HIGGINS COMEBACK FAILS
Alex
Higgins made his first appearance in a competitive event since he
bowed out of the World snooker events in 1997, but his first round
loss in the unofficial Irish Pro Championship suggests that perhaps it
really is time the former World Champion hung up his cue.
Higgins was drawn against sixteen year old Darren Dornan, an up and
coming Northern Ireland junior international player from Ballynahinch.
Despite what must have been a daunting occasion for the teenager he
proved too strong for Higgins, who mustered a high break of just 23
during his 5-1 loss to Dornan.
There were one or two brief glimpses of past Higgins magic and
glimpses also of the Higgins temperament as he turned on a press
photographer during the match.
The
event, which is an attempt to resurrect the defunct Irish Professional
Championship, failed to attract Ireland's leading star Ken Doherty, In
his absence world no. 16 Joe Swail assumes the mantle of favourite to
win an event which features 8 Irish professionals and 8 amateurs.
Joe
Swail duly fulfilled his favourites tag, to win the event.
MAXIMUM FOR JAMIE
Fourteen
year old Jamie Jones from Neath, South Wales, compiled a 147 maximum
break during a practice match at the Empire Club, Neath on Sunday 29
December 2002.
Wales' most promising junior added
further credence to his growing reputation. Jamie, who will be fifteen
in February 2003, is one of the youngest players to compile a
witnessed, match 147.
The official record still stands with
Ronnie O'Sullivan for a tournament 147, made when he was 15, during
the English Amateur championship.

First win for Jonny Vaughan
Neath's Jonathan
Vaughan won his first Welsh ranking event, with a narrow final win
over Welsh champion Tim English at the Green Baize, Swansea.
Former Welsh Under 21
champion, Vaughan put out former pro Mark Tucker in the quarters and Andrew Pagett in the semis.
High break for the event went to Wrexham's
Gareth Coppack with 126.
White Hot
Eleven year old
Michael White, from Neath, crowned his second Welsh Under 14
victory of the season with a magnificent break of 100 in the
final. White took 14 reds, 13 blacks and a pink, and i have a
possible 146 clearance, but after taking the black for his
century, was left with a very difficult cut red to the middle,
which went astray. White added further breaks of 44 an 49 in his
3-0 win over Kieran Taylor. It was White's first century in the
Welsh Junior Academy, but he already has his name in the Guinness
Book of Records for making a match century at the age of nine
during a club match in Neath. Caerphilly's Perry Foster lost out
in the quarter finals on this occasion, but he'll enjoy a new
challenge next week, when he travels to York at the invitation of
the BBC, to take on legend Steve Davis at both snooker and pool
during the UK Championship.
Scottish Juniors on Cue
Ross Valence beat Steven
Kirkpatrick in the final of the third Scottish Under 16 ranking
event.
Michael Collumb beat Anthony
McGill to take the Under 14s final.
Welsh Juniors
Llanelli's Ricky Jones won the second Under 16 ranking event,
beating namesake Jamie Jones in the final. (there
is more information on all Welsh snooker on the
WELSH pages)
Scottish Juniors on Cue
Anthony McGill has added his
second Under 14 victory of the season and Michael Collumb won the
third Under 16 event. Event 1 went to Edwin McCormack and Event 2
was won by Ross Vallance.
Neath's fourteen year old
Jamie Jones has won the first Welsh Under 18 event of the season,
beating Ricky Jones in the final.
The first English junior
billiards event of the season has been won by Robin Wilson. He beat
Dominic Mulhall 458-244 in the final, helped by a 116 break. Wilson
also compiled breaks of 152 and 149 on his way to the final.
