2008 Welsh Open NEWS - FORUM - DRAW - INFORMATION 26-28 January @ Pontin's. 11-17 February @ Newport Leisure Centre, Wales |
|
NOTES: You can watch LIVE STREAMING of the final stages of the Pontin's Junior Festival & Cuefactor MODS & Potters doubles tonight and the finals LIVE on Friday. From Saturday we will be streaming the PIOS live... GCS LIVE STREAMING ... Congratulations to ten year old Shane Castle who has won the Pontin's Juniors 8-11 age group, beating Morriston's Ieuan Davies 2-1 in a closely contested final... Next on LIVE STREAMING will be the 12-15 final featuring Duane Jones from Cardiff against Jason Devaney, followed at 1pm by the 16-20 final which will see Llanelli's Stephen Ellis against Sheffield's Adam Duffy... Duffy holds the high break of the week with a superb 139 total clearance. Stephen Hendry beats Stephen Lee 5-2 in the first quarter final of the day... you can check the latest updated ranking positions on our Provisional and One Year Rankings pages.. Jason Devaney from Ballina, Co. Mayo in Ireland has beaten Duane Jones to lift the Pontin's 12-15 title and with it a prize package worth £2000.. John Higgins and Mark Selby have started their match, a repeat of the 2007 World Final... so Selby gains revenge over John Higgins for his world defeat and he will face Hendry in tomorrow's semi final... next up we have Ronnie O'Sullivan against Ali Carter, the two Essex boys... rather oddly Ronnie is playing with a brand new tip and is struggling a bit at the moment and Carter is taking advantage to gain a 2-0 lead... we're in for a thrilling decider now, as Carter produced a brilliant century there to level at 4-4... Ronnie dominated the decider although Carter was unlucky on the last red, to fluke it when laying a snooker and have no position on a colour... Shaun Murphy and Joe Perry will start in about 20 minutes... and a blistering performance by Murphy tonight and a 5-0 drubbing of Joe Perry. So what a line up we've got for Saturday's semi finals - Murphy against O'Sullivan and Hendry against Selby. Join us on Saturday at 1300 GMT. Good afternoon and welcome to a bright and sunny, although cold, Newport.. we are eagerly awaiting the start of the first semi final featuring a rejuvenated Stephen Hendry against the man in form, Mark Selby... Today you can also keep up to date with all the latest scores from PIOS Event 6 and enjoy LIVE STREAMING from table 1, the next Streaming match will commence at 13.30 when you will be able to watch two of England's leading players David Grace and Craig Steadman go head to head... it's a Yorkshire-Lancashire clash as David is from Leeds, based at the Northern Snooker Centre, while Craig is from Bolton... Craig and David are just getting their match underway now... Selby and Hendry are bogged down in the opening frame... both have had chances but neither has imposed himself on the frame yet... so after a frame that ticked past forty minutes, Selby clinched it on the pink... a much better second frame with an opening 56 from Selby... but an excellent response from Hendry's who's cleared up with 67... good breaks from both players in the third and it's all on the pink and black now and Selby gets the pink... It's Hendry turn to nick one on the pink and level at the interval... Selby's regained his lead with a frame winning 71... and here's the perfect response from Hendry as his break reaches 67 now... and yet another century to Hendry's tally, a brilliant 130 there... some fun and games in frame seven, Selby gets a nice snooker behind the brown, misses narrowly to get another and goes in-off at another try, all of which brought some smiles and banter between the players... Selby has the last laugh as he clears from the last red to lead 4-3... It's tit for tat as Hendry clinches the frame in one visit with a century, his second of the match... Again Selby regains the lead, this time just one frame from the final... Selby has opened a 31-0 lead in the frame he needs to book his place in the final... he's 60 ahead now and opened the reds, the winning line is rapidly approaching... and he's done it... join us again at 19.00 for the big clash between O'Sullivan and Murphy... meanwhile you can continue to enjoy our live streaming of the PIOS... currently showing is Paul Hunter Scholarship pupil Daniel Wells... Good evening welcome back, here come the players into the arena... Ronnie slots home his first shot of the match, a cracking long red to get the match underway... Ronnie broke down on 51 and Murphy cleared with 70 but no mistake in frame two as O'Sullivan pounced on a bad safety by Shaun and has won the frame at that visit... as we fully expected, a fabulous match so far as 76 by Murphy gives him the lead once again... Ronnie's turn to dish up and it's 2-2 at the interval... absolutely brilliant break building from both players... play resumes with a trademark long red by O'Sullivan... we still have our live stream from the PIOS... Germany's No. 1 Lasse Munstermann is currently in action on our tv table... it looks like another one visit frame as O'Sullivan's break is up to 62 now... the last four frame have left the opponent scoreless, apart from 7 points for Murphy when Ronnie launched cue ball and black off the table in frame four! and there's back to back centuries for O'Sullivan, sublime snooker.. the players are human after all, Murphy fails to get the pack open off the blue so his break ends at 26, O'Sullivan gets a kick which knocks his intended red off line... Murphy recovered to take the frame and level the match again, but now it's Ronnie who's getting ahead in frame seven... all the reds have found their way to the baulk end of the table and he's picking his way through the traffic... and he's made 75 to lead again and it looks like he's going to go two frames ahead at this crucial stage... a break of 62 means Murphy needs two snookers... Ronnie is on course for a match winning break now and for good measure it's all blacks so far as he reaches 64... he's making sure of the frame first and has taken a blue, but still on course for a 145... he's secured the match and can concentrate on the high break now.. and he sets a new target with that wonderful 143 total clearance... what a fabulous day's snooker we've had and I'm sure the final will be a match to savour... you can watch the final at 1330 and 1900 GMT on Sunday... join us then... here we go then, just a couple of shots from each player and no opening yet for either... Selby earns the first chance after snookering O'Sullivan... and he's grabbed the chance and won the opener... Ronnie makes 31 but misses a tricky blue... Selby has worked his way back into the frame and needs blue to black to pinch it... and he does with a 39 clearance... Selby messes up the break off so an early gift to Ronnie in frame three... the break ends at 50 as his attempt to split the pack is unsuccessful... Selby needs snookers now and he's got the first of them... Ronnie's got a frame on the board and that should settle him but he's left a red over the green pocket from his break-off in the next... a poor safety from Selby gives Ronnie a clear chance now... he makes 44 before running out of position... he comes back to rescue the frame and he'll be the happier to be 2-2 as Ronnie has not fired yet in this match... Ronnie misses his chance on the resumption, Selby counters with 52 and has a 30 points lead with two reds left... and Selby claims the frame... chances for both in frame six, Ronnie's edged ahead 42-35 on the yellow... a clever snooker by Ronnie forces two fouls out of Selby and now Selby needs a snooker on the brown... stalemate in frame seven so we're having a re-rack... Selby this time gets in with a clear chance and takes the lead again... into frame eight but not for long, it's another re-rack... a miss by Selby gives Ronnie an early chance... it's still not happened for Ronnie, just 22 at that visit... an error by Selby and Ronnie should accumulate enough points here to level the match at the interval... and he rounds off in style with a century... so all square, join us at 19.00 for the concluding frames... Good evening, frame nine is underway, the players received a great welcome from the capacity crowd here at the Newport Leisure Centre... the first chance falls to Ronnie, a nice chance for him to settle quickly into his rhythm and get the crowd cheering... he's racing round the table and has clinched the frame already... Here's an early chance again for Ronnie, Selby's attempted red stays near the pocket... this is just the start Ronnie needed, two quick fire frames, he weathered the storm this afternoon but he's come out all guns blazing tonight... and a superb century there to set the crowd cheering.. into frame eleven and this safety exchange could provide a great opportunity for whoever gets the chance... red scattered around the baulk line and the pack loosened.. Ronnie gets the chance but doesn't do much with it, a good red to centre has set Selby onto a break, 50 so far... and he's clinched that frame to pull one back... 28 points on the board for Selby, but he's left a red to centre for Ronnie to counter... and he makes 63 to lead by 35 with 35 left on... Ronnie flukes the red so he leads 7-5 at the interval... back come the players for the final frames, an error from Selby and a chance for O'Sullivan.... he's made 54, lost position and missed a hard pink to centre, which stays out, a long red which Selby turns down... an astute snooker earns Ronnie the chance to clinch the frame and now just one from victory... errors from both players in this frame, but Selby has another chance and has 26 on the board already... he moves along to 46 before missing a hard red to centre and Ronnie misses an equally difficult red to a centre pocket, so Selby has another chance to keep in the match... good long from Ronnie and he's made an opening here in frame fifteen... he misses on 22 but Selby can't capitalise so a safety duel at the moment... Selby forces the error after a tight snooker and the reds are scattered far and wide... Selby compiles 62, but still needs one more red, two reds left, both safe on the cushion at the moment, Selby leads 62-22, Selby gets a brilliant red and he's only one frame behind now... It's getting tense now and Selby's safety has left a red on for Ronnie... he's up to 53 now but he's not in good position on the next red.. and he's forced to play safe... Ronnie's safety leaves a red for Selby, not a great chance, but it is a chance for Selby to make inroads... he's unlucky having made 21, that one red covered another, so just safety now... Selby wins the safety battle again and is making a further dent in Ronnie's lead, only 20 the difference now... with two reds left... Selby gets the last red and now is just six points behind on the yellow.... a brilliant brown and Selby's won the frame - so here we go again a decider - what odds a Ronnie maximum again!! Ronnie makes 24 but fouls the blue with his waistcoat and a chance for Selby, and a good red to start but no position... now the safety is pushing reds back towards the baulk end and they're well spread... Selby wins the safety again and now has a chance to make a run for the line, it's not easy, but he's now 36-24 ahead.. a good 48 before a missed red sees Selby leading 54-24 with three reds left... nothing on at the moment... Selby misses an attempted double and leaves the red on, so here's a good chance now for O'Sullivan... but he can't get the last red off the cushion and he's gone in off.... should be match to Selby now... and it is, what a remarkable come back by the Leicester Jester who wins his first ranking title.
