Match Notes

Good evening and welcome to the first nine frame of this match. An interesting encounter as we shall see how Mark Williams' return to form is progressing.

Mark Davis is a dangerous opponent and no stranger to the Crucible... Davis starts with a great long red from Williams' break off, and rolls up behind the green, safely negotiated by Williams and now he's got his first scoring chance... and very good so far, on to 57, still some work to do yet, that was a very good 79 break and very encouraging for Williams supporters... and he's started well in the second too, onto 38 now... but no obvious red on... and he's forced to play safe... Another chance fell to Williams but he's missed a black off the spot and looks outraged! Davis has a chance to respond here... he makes only 7 and he's left Williams another opening... but he's missed in the same pocket for the third time this frame... Davis lays a snooker... and a perfect escape by Williams... and he's 2-0 up... Davis led by 34 but Williams is now on a run of 20... and that 44 takes him ahead, he's back at the table again, the last red disappears and it's going to be 3-0... Williams is strolling round the table, he looks back to his very best, I just hope he isn't doomed because I tipped him as a possible Championship winner last week! The break reaches 43 but he's lost ideal position now... he takes his medicine and runs for cover... Williams finds a long distance plant, no position so safe again... but he's picked off the balls he needs to take a 4-0 lead at the interval.

Williams picks up where he left off before the interval, this break ended at 33 when a red along the rail rattled the jaws... Davis has responded well and moves 39-33 ahead and still in good position... he pauses a moment as a huge roar greets the players return to the other table and maybe that took the edge of his concentration as he missed pink to centre, so over to Williams again and what a great red down the rail to the green pocket, vintage Williams that... and it's 5-0 and it could be 6-0 soon, as Williams races onto 56 in the next... all blacks so far ... these balls aren't set too bad, the reds are away from cushions and the break is now 80, this is the fourth maximum attempt already this week... not to be, he's missed the red stretching.. but he'll de delighted to be 6-0 ahead... there's no stopping Williams in this mood, he was on another maximum attempt there until he missed the black on 65 and he hasn't actually won the frame, so he'll have to suffer while Davis attempts to clear up, but he's not going to, a simple red missed and Williams secures the frame... Davis' break leaves a red to centre so Williams is off and running again, having stopped for a minute to check out the score on the other table, that's how relaxed he is now... this is just relentless scoring by the Welsh potting machine... 57 now... eventually Williams misses on 62, but another chance and he gets the red he needs and so it's 8-0... AT last Davis gets his hand on the table, 26 ahead now...he makes 50 but that's not enough and he's let Williams in again... a rare miss by the Welshman... and Davis wins a frame at last, he won't become only the second man to suffer a Crucible whitewash - the only previous one was Eddie Charlton, beaten by John Parrott. so the end of a brilliant session by Mark Williams.

Good afternoon, welcome back for what you'd expect to be a quick victory for Mark Williams, but stranger things have happened at the Crucible over the years... an early opportunity for Mark Davis, but he's got the proverbial mountain to climb here, it's more a case of damage limitation at the moment.. he's broken down having made only 12, he's got another chance here though to add more points... but he can't and the chance goes to Williams... he's only made 28 and left a red on for Davis... Davis scores only 1 point.. a third chance in this frame for Davis... he's now got a 60-28 lead... a foul by Davis on the yellow and Williams is only 21 behind now.. that's two misses from this cleverly laid Williams snooker... and another miss and he's left Williams the chance to clear up... which he does... Davis is on a good break in the next, 42 now... and now he's on 62 he's got the frame safe... unless Williams gets a snooker, 55 behind with 51 on... so Davis gets a frame... Williams is already in good position in frame twelve, only made 7 but this red will free the black and the next obstacle will be opening the pack... he's missed the black, not in good form so far today... this looks better from the Welshman, onto 24 at this visit... he's failed at 39 and Davis gets the chance now, 30 already, he's made 46 before running out of position... Williams has found a red and this is the chance to clinch the match... he's missed the last red and left it on for Davis... he smacks the table in anger, not a wise thing to do, just ask Michael Holt! Davis takes the frame and stretches the match a little further... again Williams has a good chance to build the match winning break... 31 and counting... 70 now, 67 left and that's clinched it with that tricky red to centre... so Williams goes through to face the winner of O'Sullivan v Chuang and that will be a mouth-watering match if he faces Ronnie...
