WELCOME

May I take this opportunity in welcoming you all to what is now one of the most prestigious events in the whole of the Junior Snooker calendar.

We have individual champions and international players in abundance at this years festival and it should prove to be a feast of fabulous snooker.

As always, there are a few ground rules to be observed, we are very proud of our snooker facilities and with your help we can maintain the standards.

No food, drinks, other than bottle water, are allowed in the snooker centre and please, please, switch off all mobile phones. Culprits will be asked to leave the arena.

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking the General Manager here at Prestatyn, Mr Cliff Sandall and all of his staff for the help and enthusiasm in helping to put this event together, and all the officials and media at this year's festival.

And finally, can I ask parents and friends not to coach or give advice from the sidelines. You not only embarrass the players, you also upset other spectators.

Have a great festival, good luck, enjoy snooker and the friendship of those around you.

Kind regards

Roland Van Laere

COMPETITION RULES

1. At each age group players will compete in a ROUND ROBIN SERIES made up of sub-groups and from these, players will qualify for the final stages.
2. At the sub-group stages each player will play a two frame match against every other player in that group (subject to entries). A player winning by 2-0 will be awarded three points, while a drawn match will result in one point being awarded to each player.
3. Depending on the number of entries, there will be eight or sixteen sub-groups in each age group and the top two players in each sub-group will qualify for the knockout stages. The non-qualifiers will be entered into a Plate Competition.
4. Group positions will be decided by the highest number of points and in the event of two or more players being level on points, frame differential will then count. If the players are still tied the winner of the match between those players take the higher position, but if their match ended in a 1-1 draw a one frame match will be played if that is necessary to decide who qualifies.
5. GROUP ‘A’ matches in the knock-out stages will be ‘best of three’ frames throughout. GROUP ‘B’ matches will be ‘best of five’ frames throughout, while GROUP ‘C’ will be
‘best of five’ frames with the FINAL being ‘best of seven’ frames. In the Plate Competition, matches will be one frame only up to the QUARTER-FINALS and thereafter they will be ‘best of three’ frames.
6. All players must report to the CONTROL DESK and be ready to play at the time appointed for their match. Lateness in reporting and being ready to play will mean that the
offending player will lose one frame for the first fifteen minutes of lateness or part thereof and a further frame for each succeeding five minutes or part thereof that they are late. The onus is on the player to check his/her match times.
7. Dress for the early round matches will be black trousers and shoes, with long sleeved or polo shirts tucked into trousers. Shirts must have collars and TRAINERS ARE NOT
ALLOWED. Formal Wear, black trousers, long sleeve shirts, black shoes, waistcoat and bow tie will be worn for all knock-out stages.
8. The MISS RULE will not be applied in GROUP ‘A’ or GROUP ‘B’ matches until the stage is reached when these matches are Refereed. The MISS RULE will be applied in all GROUP ‘C’ matches.
9. The Cuefactor MODS and Potters competition will commence on Wednesday evening and all day Thursday, registration up to Tuesday evening 6.00pm, a Junior and an Adult will play as a pair and remain with the same partner throughout the competition which will be of a one frame duration. All players must register with Cuefactor and receive their wristband before they can enter the competition.

HISTORY

Lieutenant Colonel Walter Rowley OBE was born in Preston, Lancashire in 1913.
Following in the family tradition of joining the British Army he was commissioned in September 1941 at Sandhurst and spent the Second World War in France, Burma and India. His service took him to Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaya from 1945 to 1961 which included a six month attachment to the American Army based in Chicago USA.
In Her Majesty’s Honours List of June 1960 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire.
During the following year he retired from the Army and took a post which was to continue his life of travel, although in a very different way. Walter Rowley was fortunate to be interviewed by Fred Pontin (later Sir Fred Pontin) and they struck up a relationship which was to change the course of Walter’s life. He joined Pontin’s Holidays gaining managerial experience in the UK, Majorca, Spain, Greece, Yugoslavia and Morocco. Walter became totally involved to the point where Pontin’s became as much a part of his life as had the Army previously.
In 1974, Walter became Public Relations Executive for the Company and then Special Events Holiday Executive. Even after his retirement he was retained by Holiday Club Pontin’s as a Consultant.
A man who thrived on activity, he was a founder member of the Under-privileged Children’s Charity Club formed in 1975 in Bristol. He was also Secretary of the Parochial Church Council of St. Bridget’s Church, Brean, Somerset, in addition to being Chairman or a Member of many other local committees.
Walter became involved in snooker in 1974 when Pontin’s Snooker Festivals began and he took a great interests in the careers of such players as Ray Reardon, Steve Davis
and John Parrott, to name but a few.
It was largely due to his efforts that, during the snooker boom of the late 1970’s and 1980’s, Pontin’s became the Mecca for snooker players of all ages as they made their annual pilgrimage to the Snooker Festivals at various Pontin’s Holiday Centres, but especially to the Festivals at Prestatyn Sands.
He had three books published in his latter years but he will be remembered most of all because he was a true gentleman and a friend to us all.
