Eugene started playing snooker when he was 15 at Monkstown WMC. In 1980, having already represented Ireland in Home International Events, he travelled to Australia for the World Amateur Championships, where he compiled a, then record, break of 128.

He turned professional in 1981, and in the course of a 17 year professional career reached two major semi finals and helped Irish teams to World Cup victories. He also reached the Last 16 of the World Championship in 1986.

Eugene also played as a Billiard professional and won several Pro-Am billiards events. His highest ranking was 20th in 1986/7.

Since reverting to Amateur status he become Irish Team Captain, helping them to runners up spot in the 1999 Home Internationals.
