Biography

In 2002 Liu won six out of seven group matches in the 2002 World under 21 championship in Latvia, knocking in a break of 102 in the process.

He beat fellow Chinese player Tian Pengfei in the last 32 and Singapore's Renfred Koh in the last 16, but like the rest of the field had no answer to the irresistible talent of China's fifteen year old Ding Junhui, who beat Liu on his way to lifting the title.

In the 2003 event Song finished as runner up to Australia's Neil Robertson, an achievement which earned him a concession to the WSA main tour.

He missed the first event of the season, but made amends after that, becoming the first Chinese player to reach the televised stages of a ranking event. He got to the Last 32 of the Welsh Open where he played Hong Kong's Marco Fu, going down 5-3, but impressing many pundits as "one to watch" for the future.
