| BURNETT SETS A NEW WORLD RECORD 17 OCTOBER 2004 | |||

Burnett compiled a break of 148, during his 9-8 second round victory over
Leo Fernandez in the Travis Perkins UK Championship in Pontin's on
Saturday.Burnett's big break came in frame fourteen. He was snookered on all the reds after Fernandez fouled and selected the brown as his free ball. He then set about clearing the table, taking sixteen reds with colours and then the six colours. The previous record for a 16 red break was held by Steve James, who compiled 135 in the 1990 World Championship. The non-tournament record is currently held by Stoke's Jamie Cope who, last year, compiled 151 in witness practice. Tony Drago has made 149 in a practice match, but no one has ever made more than 147 in an official tournament. And
the break came just at the right time for Burnett as it took him into an
8- China's Ding Junhui compiled a 102, and his Belgian opponent Bjorn Haneveer, 126, but Ding ran out a 9-5 winner. Australian Neil Robertson continued his rich vein of form, running in breaks of 116, 63, 58, 68, 85, 66 and 55 in a 9-4 victory against Dave Finbow. Mike Dunn won the North-East shoot out, beating IBSF World Under 21 Champion Gary Wilson, 9-3. Dunn secured a 5-3 lead at half-time and then ran away with the match, compiling 82 twice and 60 as he froze the youngster out of the game. Marcus Campbell stormed to a 9-2 win against Mike Hallett. The Scot led 6-0 before Hallett clawed back two frames, but it was only a token gesture and Campbell dominated the next three frames. |
