| WILSON TOONS UP FOR A NORTH EAST SHOWDOWN 14 OCTOBER 2004 | |||
Gary
Wilson, the reigning IBSF World Under 21 Champion, won his first match as
a main tour professional, with a hard earned 9-6 win over Welshman Paul
Davies in Pontin's on Wednesday.Wilson raced into a 3-0 lead with breaks of 81 and 52 in the second and third frames. Davies responded by constructing breaks of 115 and 100 as he bounced back to take three out of the next four frames to gain a 6-4 lead. Nineteen year old Wilson put an stop to the rot with a run of 78, but lost the next. But he smashed in a 131 clearance in frame thirteen and galloped to the winning line, adding the next two frame in just twenty-two minutes. Waiting for Wilson in round two is Mike Dunn. Not only is Dunn one of the proprietors of Planet Snooker, who manage and sponsor Wilson, but they both play in the same Planet Snooker Premier League and are regular opponents in their native north-east.
Neil Robertson seems to go from strength to strength. Full of confiden Robertson safely pocket the next two frames, but with the winning line clearly in sight, the victory celebrations were delayed as Davison pieced together runs of 84 and 67. But that was too little, far too late and a 56 break rounded off Robertson's win. Darren Morgan's brief renaissaince came to a shuddering halt, at the hands of an old adversary. Morgan lost the first four frames to Mike Hallett before staging something of a come back, to trail only 5-3 at the half way stage. On the resumption Hallett quickly put paid to any hopes Morgan had of retrieving the match as he wrapped up the next three frames. Joe Jogia clinched a nail-biting 9-8 win over Irishman Joe Delaney, after a see-saw match. Earlier Jogia recovered from a 3-0 deficit, running in breaks of 57, 63, 72, 87 and 56 to draw level at 4-4. He constructed 93 to level again at 5-5 and went ahead for the first time with a colours success in the next. Delaney came back with 71 and won the next three as well to lead 8-7. Jogia, now based in Letchworth, then produced a superb 120 break to level the match and won the decider 71-4. |
