Ireland's
Eugene Hughes booked his place in the semi final line up of the
Seniors Championship with a 4-2 win over Australia's Robby
Foldvari.
As expected every ball of
every frame
was contested with the utmost concentration, skill and
experience.
Foldvari took the opener, a
useful
late run of 31 wiping out an
earlier effort of 35 from Hughes and the Aussie turned on the
style
in
frame two with an immaculately crafted
75.
Time for a fight back from the
tenacious Irishman. A run of 48 gave Hughes frame three and he
levelled the match after some of the best safety play one could
wish to see anywhere.
Hughes added the next to lead
for the first time and the tide continued to turn in his favour
as He chipped
in breaks of 45 and 32 to complete his win.
Finland's Jyri Virtanen has
been the revelation of the Seniors Championship. Taking a form
guide from recent European Championships, one would have got
fairly generous odds on the Finn booking a semi final spot, but
he has and in
dramatic fashion.
He
led 3-1 against Belgium's Yvan Leus, who'd upset the form book
in the last 16, beating Welshman Ron Jones.
Leus snatched the fourth on
the black to stay in the match and then took the next two to
send the match into the decider. After a close contest Virtanen
settled it on the colours.
Australia's former
professional Glen Wilkinson edged out former Wor
ld
Billiards Champion, Geet Sethi, 4-3 after an absorbing contest.
Breaks of 53 and 62 gave
Wilkinson a 2-1 lead, but Sethi levelled on the colours and an
effort of 43 gave him the lead.
But from thereon Wilkinson
dominated the match,
winning the last two frames by a comfortable margin.
Dene O'Kane ensured it would be
an Oceania versus Europe final. He ended the brave run of
Englishman Alan Trigg and faces Wilkinson in the semis.
O'Kane was in imperious form,
running in breaks of 75, 61, 70 and a new seniors high break, a
130 total clearance. Trigg battled back to take two frames, but
he couldn't stop O'Kane in that sort of form.
O'Kane had ended the hopes of
Stephen Baillie in the last 16, but not before the Scot gave him
a mighty fright, opening a 2-0 lead before a run of 91 got
O'Kane back on track and helped turn the match in his favour.
